Olajuwon to retire

ONLY FITTING
As sad as the ending is, it's only fitting that Hakeem and Clyde will walk away from the game together
After loss to Phoenix, Olajuwon set to announce this year is his last

When Mario Elie hit the "Kiss of Death" shot in the 1995 Western Conference semifinals, it was the final stake in the heart of a very talented Suns team that never won a championship. Ironically, the Suns 97-86 win over the Rockets may have returned the favor. Fed up with losing and the prospect of the Rockets rebuilding next season, Hakeem Olajuwon is set to follow Clyde Drexler into retirement at the end of this season. CNNSI is now confirming the report that the Dream will in fact call it a career after this season, and may in fact follow Drexler to the University of Houston in some capacity. Though that is unconfirmed, one Rockets source says Hakeem is in fact "leaning in that direction." The Rockets have called a 5pm press conference, and are expected to reveal Hakeem's plans. It's a devastating blow to a franchise that has taken several hits this season, but with that aside, no player, in any sport, will ever have the impact in the city of Houston that Olajuwon has had. I can't think of anything I'll miss more.

Hakeem retires, Rocks to rebuild from scratch

Rocket Schedule & Clutch Recaps

Clutch Recap: Phoenix 97, Houston 86

Drexler in SI article: In Jackie MacMullan's Sports Illustrated article 'Happy to be Heading Out', Clyde Drexler had this to say about the supposed rift between Charles Barkley: "That's a fantasy someone dreamed up," Drexler says. "Charles's locker is right next to mine. When we have a difference, we air it out and move on. Charles is Charles. He shouldn't change for anyone, and I would never ask him to. Neither of us has ever had a problem lacing up our tennis shoes and trying to win a game together."

30 Greatest Rockets: The Rockets announced the list of the 30 greatest players in franchise history Tuesday. I've got a question in the form of two words... Allen Leavell?

Hold your breath: Rumors started to trickle in on local sports radio that Hakeem Olajuwon is very frustrated with the Rockets this season. Hakeem's wife said on the air, "This year has taken its toll on him." One word: scary.

Rocket sound files: We're looking to see if anyone has any sound WAV files from the Rockets' championship seasons of 1994 and 1995, or for that matter any good sound clips from before the past 2 seasons. Back then we didn't save clips, and really don't have many save for a few off of the Rocket championship videos. The reason we're looking for these is we're trying to piece together more and more for the multimedia section, including music with clips mixed in. I have TONS of sound files from the past 2 seasons, but if you have any cool Rocket sound clips from before (and maybe even something I may not have from the past 2 years), please feel free to contact Clutch with what sound files you may be able to send in. Thanks.

Barkley fined: After Charles Barkley was thrown out of the Rockets' blow out loss to Orlando last Friday, he called referee Jack Nies "gutless" and a ref who "holds grudges". Today, it came back at him. The NBA fined Barkley $10,000 for his comments. Said Barkley, "I stick by what I say. I don't care about $10,000. The money goes to a good worthy cause. So I look at it in a positive light. I got my money's worth. I definitely got my money's worth." What really has to make you mad about this is what 'Big Sexy' said when asked if this might hurt team chemistry: "I'm not concerned about that. When someone disrespects me, I'm going stand up for myself." Way to not be "concerned" Chuck, and to think of yourself.

Cleaning House: Excerpt from Mitch Lawrence's NBA column at ESPN, "The Rockets are ecstatic that Clyde Drexler took the University of Houston coaching job. They did not want the Glide back but knew he wanted to return. Not re-signing him would have caused a public-relations nightmare. 'Except for Hakeem (Olajuwon), we're cleaning house,' said one Rockets suit."

In case you missed it: Many talked about it, now you can see it on your computer. In Indiana, Hakeem grabs his own miss and blindly, with his back turned to the hoop, throws the ball over his shoulder and makes the huge bucket with 1:05 left in the game. There was no foul called on the play. Watch closely -- don't ask yourself if he got fouled, but how many times he got fouled on the play. AVI | QUICKTIME
