Rudy Tomjanovich could be roaming the sidelines for the University of Michigan next season
|
Chalk this season up as the wildest one in years. According to the Detroit News, Rudy Tomjanovich could become the next head coach at the University of Michigan. A source close to the Rockets confirmed the report to ClutchCity.net early Sunday morning. Rudy played at the University of Michigan in the late 60's and was expected to head up a committee to find the new coach. He was offered the job outright and turned it down but has since reconsidered. An announcement is expected Monday morning. If the scenario plays out, Rudy will finish this season with the Rockets before moving on to Ann Arbor. "You could tell this season has taken its toll on him," said one source. "But this came out of nowhere." Stay tuned...

Swoopes wants NBA stint with Rockets
Posted: April 1, 2000 9:11 AM
Houston Comets star Sheryl Swoopes confirmed Sunday morning that she wants to become the first woman to play in the NBA, and she wants to do it with the Rockets. This season. Swoopes told the Texas Tech paper that though she couldn't be on any playoff roster, she feels she could give a shot in the arm to the Rockets' playoff hopes. "What those guys needs is heart and desire," said Swoopes. "I can help them there." Swoopes said she wouldn't mind playing behind Steve Francis, Cuttino Mobley, Shandon Anderson, Moochie Norris and Sean Colson. The WNBA star also stressed the need to join a "real league".

Medical Report has Rockets execs worried
Posted: April 1, 2000 8:22 AM
Fearing the worst, Kelvin Cato underwent an MRI, a brainscan, a series of blood tests and an enema Saturday night, and a team of doctors confirmed: He has no pulse and little chance of revival. "He's alive and doing fine," said one team physician. "But his heart doesn't pump and his blood doesn't flow. It's like he's lifeless out there." Speaking on the condition of anonymity, one doctor said his medical analysis classifies him as a dead tree.

Move to Memphis could nullify Rockets-Grizz deal
Posted: April 1, 2001 7:32 AM
Team officials for the Rockets wouldn't comment publically, but the word is they're not too upset about a possible Vancouver Grizzlie move to Memphis because it would nullify their first round draft pick commitment to the team. "Our deal is with Vancouver. We made no deal with Memphis," said one exec off the record. However, Memphis may go the legal route to have Steve Francis returned to the team as a result. Federal Express, who is backing/funding the move to Memphis, insists they wouldn't have traded away Francis and will seek his absolutely positively overnight return. Said Federal Express VP Tom Ashcroft: "I mean Othella Harrington and Michael Dickerson? Come on."

ClutchCity.net Lottery Generator back online
Posted: March 27, 2001 8:08 AM
Lottery Race 2001 may be kicking in full swing here shortly, but in the meantime we updated the Lottery Generator this weekend to let NBATalk use it so feel free to go at it. Last year when the Rockets were definitely lotto-bound, we designed the Lotto Generator and it created a huge buzz around the web. Remember: The Rockets only have their first round pick if they miss the playoffs. If they make the playoffs the pick automatically goes to Vancouver... err Louisville, Memphis or whatever they call themselves this week. At #13, they have a 1 in 200 shot of getting the top pick, though some claim within their first few shots at the generator it was golden results for Rocket fans.

Hakeem ready to go, should play against Jazz
Posted: March 27, 2001 7:50 AM
According to reports, Hakeem Olajuwon looked very sharp in practice Monday and will play tonight as the Rockets face the Jazz. "He's an amazing player. He was very sharp in practice and I didn't see any rust," said Rudy T, who admitted he didn't know how much Hakeem would play. Originally Dream was out because he was taking a drug called coumadin, a blood thinner, that could possibly result in a more serious internal injury if he encountered hard contact while playing. He then switched to daily injections of heparin, a low molecular weight blood thinner and has since stopped taking that and is now taking aspirin daily. During the game Hakeem will wear elastic support stockings and will constantly be monitored by doctors for the rest of the year. "It is great to get back, it is a good feeling how the rest of the guys made me feel so good about getting back," said Hakeem.

Seattle still thinking about Mo
Posted: March 26, 2001 7:44 PM
Though the Chronicle talked about this the other day, Frank Hughes of the Tacoma Tribune wrote that Taylor and the Sonics is possible next season. This past offseason Taylor was deciding between the Rockets and Sonics and when the original Patrick Ewing deal fell through and Vin Baker was still on the Seattle roster, it made the decision easy for Mo to come to Houston. As long as Vin, who has a fat, multi-year deal, is there it's doubtful Seattle would be the place for Mo: "You don't want to sign a long-term contract for a team with a guy who already has a long-term contract and you have to compete for the duration of the contract," said Taylor. "I'm not saying I'm afraid of the competition, but I play power forward, and I want to come to a team that doesn't have a power forward so I can come in and just fit right in."

Rudy T heads Michigan search committee for new coach
Posted: March 26, 2001 10:43 AM
Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich, who starred at the University of Michigan in the late 60's, has been asked to head a list of 10 athletes and administrators who have been asked to help Michigan's athletic director to find the Wolverines' next basketball coach. Rudy T was drafted out of Michigan #2 overall in 1970 by the then San Diego Rockets, and excelled for the Rockets for 11 seasons. Also on the list is former Rocket Tim McCormick.

Late run fuels Rockets over Wizards
The Rockets shot about as bad and looked about as lethargic as possible in the first half, but they used a 15-0 run in the fourth quarter to put away the Wizards 96-86 in D.C. Steve Francis led the Rockets with 25.

"I have no concerns about 'problems sharing' if we land Webber. Francis is a very unselfish player, he would not mind one bit to sharing with a player of Webber's caliber, as long as it gets him closer to his main goal, a championship. I think to a certain extent Mobes would feel the same way, but in either case I believe they would all get enough touches."
