NBA Comparison: Ralph Sampson Notes on Tyson Chandler
Tyson Chandler has been one of the most talked about high school players in years. He was 6'10" in 8th grade and a basketball sensation, even appearing on "60 Minutes" the summer before his freshman year of high school. Since then has been closely watched on the hoops scene. His senior season, Chandler averaged 26 points, 15 rebounds and 8 blocked shots for the Dominguez Dons. Compares himself and his style of play to his favorite NBA player, Kevin Garnett. An exceptionally athletic 7-footer, Chandler has the makings of a potential NBA star.
Strengths of Tyson Chandler
Runs the court very well and is strong for his size. Quick, agile and can get up off the floor. Good athlete who uses his size, long arms and quickness to block shots very well. Out to 16 feet has a solid jump shot. At NBA summer camps, held his own against guys that were bigger and stronger.
Weaknesses of Tyson Chandler
Some say he lacks fire. Like Sampson, has the height of a center but wants to get out on the wing like a three. Lacks bulk -- Chandler will definitely need to beef up if he's going to be a center or Shaq could snap him like a twig.
Chandler on the Rockets?
During his famous "60 Minutes" episode, Chandler was wearing a Maurice Taylor Michigan jersey and shorts, so perhaps he has Houston on the brain (actually the Lakers and Clippers are his favorite teams). Chandler is a mystery right now, but at 7'1" with a nice shot and quickness, he could be a future payoff pick if the Rockets are high enough to select him.
