Shane Battier out of Duke

NBA Comparison: Notes on Shane Battier
Shane Battier is a near legend now at Duke. The gutsy 'jack-of-all-trades' small forward averaged 19.9 points and 7.3 rebounds his senior season, leading Duke to a 35-4 record and an NCAA title. The 6'8" forward managed to come away with a few awards as well: AP Player of the Year, Naismith Award winner and Wooden Award winner, not to mention won two Defensive Player of the Year awards in his stint at Duke. Went from solid role player/defensive stopper his sophomore season to established leader in his junior season, upping his scoring mark from 9.1 to 17.4. Battier takes defenders both inside and outside and brings intelligence, hustle and intensity night in and night out on both sides of the floor.

Said Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, "[Battier's] impact on the game could never be measured in stats. He's the most complete player I've ever coached, he's magnificent."

Strengths of Shane Battier
Terrific defender, averaging over 2 steals and 2 blocks a game. Blue collar worker who will provide the rebounds and "hustle plays". Has a nice touch from the outside and around the basket. Intelligent. Tremendous leadership qualities. Brings the intangibles. High character both on and off the court.
Weaknesses of Shane Battier
Jack of all trades, master of none? Christian Laettner was the complete package/winner at Duke too, but didn't have the impact in the NBA many expected.
Battier on the Rockets?
The Rockets are targeting a small forward in this draft, and it's very possible Shane Battier is tops on the list. Playing alongside Francis and Mobley, Battier would be an excellent fit for a Rockets team looking for hustle, savvy, defense and intangibles out of the three spot.
