NBA Comparison: Scot Pollard Notes on Troy Murphy
Troy Murphy has made a name for himself differently than that of most of his fellow draftees. Rather than dominating a game with flash and athleticism, Murphy is a hard worker and a bruiser around the glass. What he lacks in athletic skill he makes up for in hustle, strength and a soft outside touch. Dominated at Notre Dame last season, putting up nearly 22 points and over 9 rebounds. Is an excellent shooter for a player his size, just under 7-feet. He is projected anywhere from the middle of the lottery to the middle of the first round.
Strengths of Troy Murphy
Murphy has good range for his size and lives off of the mid-range jumper. He has good hands and passes the ball well. He is a quick thinker who knows the game. Most of all, Murphy is tough. He works hard in the paint and around the glass. For as soft as his jumper is, his game is not. He already has the strenth to battle in the paint in the NBA.
Weaknesses of Troy Murphy
If he has a weakness, it is his athleticism, or should we say lack of athleticism? Murphy is slow and has poor lateral movement. If he had improvement in those areas, he could rate closer to Raef LaFrentz with his play. Defense is a concern. He will need to gain some speed and footwork if he wants to succeed on the next level.
Murphy on the Rockets?
It is doubtful that the Rockets would take a guy like Murphy early in the draft. A slow perimeter big man is what they have in Jason Collier. Murphy would probably be an upgrade from Collier but neither is likely to make a significant impact. Chances are that the Rockets will pass on Murphy.
