Hilton Armstrong
6-11, 235 lb senior PF/C out of Connecticut

Hilton Armstrong did not get major minutes at UConn until he was a senior, but he made them count then. The 6-foot-11 shotblocker brought interior toughness to the Huskies, averaging 9.7 points on over 60% shooting to go with 6.6 boards and 3.1 blocks, making the All-Big East Second Team. Armstrong had 4 or more blocks in 12 games as a senior, including 9 rejections in an 84-80 win over Louisville on March 4th. |
Height and wingspan are what make him a first round pick. An outstanding shot blocker, averaging 3.1 swats a night as a senior. Very solid rebounder. Has a decent mid-range jumper and good hands. Improved free-throw shooter (roughly 50% first three seasons, 69% as a senior). |
Armstrong is not really a scorer. He will have to get bigger and stronger to play in the paint at the pro level. Doesn't assert himself or bring it night in and night out. He can't create his own shot or dribble much beyond the post-up game. Rebounding is good, but not brilliant -- will have to improve. Some question if he will be anything more than a backup/shotblocking specialist. |
Though the Rockets could certainly use a shotblocker and rebounder, Armstrong is not likely to be on their radar at pick #8. Yao Ming has the center position set for years, and with all of Houston's needs, a backup is not what they will be targeting. |
