With the Rockets having drafted Yao Ming this summer and with Kelvin Cato and Jason Collier still under contract, there isn't room on the roster for another center.
Though Collier, with just one year remaining on his deal, was not that impressive at the LA Summer Pro League, the 'three-centers-under-contract' fact is why free agent Rocket center Kevin Willis is not expected to return to Houston.
But he is expected to sign elsewhere.
"I'm gonna be playing in the NBA at 40," Willis told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I've got four or five offers. I'll definitely be playing."
"Four or five offers" usually means two or three, but as many Rocket fans will attest to, Big Kev can still play.
Willis, who turns 40 on September 6th, has been hanging around his old team the Atlanta Hawks to watch them work out. Hawks VP/GM Pete Babcock said Atlanta would have no problem adding Willis to their roster, but right now there isn't a roster spot available until free agent Ira Newble makes his decision.
