It's official: Jeff Van Gundy has accepted the position as head coach of the Houston Rockets.
Van Gundy called Rockets General Manager Carroll Dawson just before 8:00am to give him the news. Dawson stated that he was so happy that he was "jumping up and down".
Reports indicate that the Rockets and Knicks have agreed to undisclosed compensation for the hiring of Van Gundy prior to the end of his contract with the Knicks which concludes on July 31. Van Gundy is not expected in Houston until details of his contract are completed between his agent and the Rockets.
The former Knicks coach will take over for long-time coach, Rudy Tomjanovich, and likely bring at least three assistants with him, most likely assistants from his former staff in New York.
However, former Rocket Mario Elie has said he would love to be a fourth assistant and will contact the new coach about that possiblity.
