If anyone still believes that Rudy T stepped down on his own last year, paving the way for former Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy to take the head Rockets coaching gig, then let that change now.
The Lakers announced this past week that Phil Jackson will not be returning to coach the team, and they have contacted the former Rockets coach about the vacancy.
Rudy released a statement Saturday, saying, "I have been contacted and I am interested in discussing things with the Lakers and hearing what they have to say."
A source confirmed to ClutchFans on Saturday that there is definite interest on Rudy T's part, and that he is looking to reunite the old gang if possible. Rudy T's assistants in Houston were Larry Smith, Jim Boylen and Mike Wells.
Only Wells is still with the Rockets. Smith is an assistant with the Hawks while Boylen is the same with the Warriors.
There would be egg all over the face of the Rockets organization on this one if it were to happen.
After "resigning" for health reasons, Tomjanovich was supposedly still with the team, but had zero in the way of a public role. Having him team with the Lakers, just a year later, is like Magic Johnson signing to play for the Celtics, or for that matter, like a Rudy Tomjanovich getting pushed out of Houston in favor of New Yorker Van Gundy. It just seems so wrong and disloyal on paper.
Along with Rudy, the Lakers have also expressed interest in USC head coach Henry Bibby.
