Apparently Rod Strickland didn't cut it in his recent Rocket workout, because the Rockets opted to go younger, signing NBDL point guard Brandin Knight on Saturday to a 10-day contract.
The 23-year old Knight comes to Houston from the Asheville Altitude of the NBDL, where in 18 games this season he averaged 10.3 points on 43% shooting, 5.4 assists and was among the league leaders in steals at just under two a contest. He also hit 5-12 three-pointers on the year.
Before that, Knight was a 4-year star at the University of Pittsburgh, finishing his college career after the 2002-2003 season. He was a Player of the Year candidate that season and twice was nominated for the Wooden National Player of the Year.
As a senior, he averaged 11.2 points, 6.3 assists, 2.1 steals and 3.5 rebounds in just under 33 minutes a night.
One glaring weakness for a point guard is his free throw shooting. His junior season he knocked down a dismal 44.2%, upping it to 57.5% in his senior year. At Asheville, he connected on just 63.3%.
Knight also is the younger brother of Charlotte Bobcats point guard Brevin Knight, currently #2 in the league in assists at 9.6 per contest.
