Advantage, Van Gundy
Lost in the shuffle of the early results has been the fact that Rockets head man Jeff Van Gundy has outcoached the Mavs' Avery Johnson

While Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming are getting all the hoopla, and deservedly so, one of the biggest untold stories after two games of the Rockets-Mavs series is how thoroughly Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy has dominated counterpart Avery Johnson in this series.

While Johnson has a full vault of playoff experience as a player and deserves tremendous credit for re-shaping the Mavericks in to a tenacious team on both ends of the floor, he is still a rookie coach in his first postseason and it is showing.

Badly.

Look no further than how they prepped for their opponents' stars. Van Gundy has prepared heavily for Dirk Nowitzki, rotating quick and pesky defenders like Ryan Bowen and T-Mac on him, and the Rockets are executing the game plan to perfection.

REGULAR SEASON 78 38.7 45.9 86.9 39.9 9.70 3.1 1.24 1.53 2.3 26.1
FIRST ROUND SERIES 2 42.0 32.5 84.0 0.0 4.5 3.0 1.0 1.0 4.5 23.5

Johnson meanwhile has had no such luck stopping McGrady, and his adjustments for Game 2 freed up Yao Ming to go an amazing 13 of 14 from the floor on Monday. 'Pick your poison' particularly applied in Game 2, and AJ felt it best to sample a lot of each.

While it's not the fault of the Dallas coach that the Rockets stars are that zeroed in (both Yao and T-Mac are ridiculously shooting over 90% from the stripe), he has done nothing to impede them from raising their games several notches. Of particular note is how flustered Avery looked after Game 2, getting frustrated with reporters when asked why Marquis Daniels hadn't played so far. Is he out of his league and losing his players at the most crucial time, or will he turn this thing around and lift his reputation as a coach?

That remains to be seen, but right now, through 2 games, the chess match between Van Gundy and Johnson looks like Garry Kasparov versus SpongeBob SquarePants.
