Dawson doesn't see instant help at 24
Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson spoke with local Channel 2 Sunday night to discuss Tuesday's NBA Draft.

As usual, Dawson was vague and never mentioned any of the draft prospects that the team has looked at, but stressed that the league has really gone to speed and athleticism.

"We want to get more athletic," said Dawson. "You can always use more shooting, you can always use more rebounding... any of those combinations. If we can get all three in one player, then that's great. We had a very veteran team this year, and if we're fortunate to get some or all of them back, then if we can add some younger guys to it that can do those three things, then it's going to be a lot easier for us."

While Dawson was hopeful of the help they could acquire with their first rounder, he was also not overly optimistic about the chances of that player helping the team right away.

"Right away is really tough at #24," said Dawson with a cringe. "There have only been 2 players that were All-Stars at #24 and that was Sam Cassell and Latrell Sprewell. To have somebody that's going to help immediately in the 20's would be very, very fortunate for us and we hope that happens, but we're willing to wait half-year or year as long as they contribute and become a factor on this team, then this pick will be worth it."

Will the Rockets move out of their #24 draft position to get a higher draft pick? Not likely, said CD.

"I've tried to move up [but] it usually takes multiple picks where you can offer a number of picks to move up ahead, and we've only got one pick this year so it's going to be difficult. Plus being such an even draft, I think everyone is happy with their pick. If there is some movement it will probably be on draft day."

Despite little to no press about the Rocket draft workouts, the team's GM said the organization's staff has been hard at work on scouting and analysis for this draft.

"Luckily I've got a real good staff, and our owner Leslie Alexander is very big in understanding that we are components of the team," said Dawson. "He really gives us, in fact, pushes us all over the world right now to find us much talent as we can because the more we find the better we're going to be. I just got back from Italy last week and we've been going nonstop looking at all these players. This is a pretty even draft so it's going to be deep."
