Rafer Arrested on Assault Charge
Point guard Rafer Alston made some Rockets news Sunday when he was arrested in Houston on charges of public intoxication and assault.

The story was posted as a rumor on the ClutchFans forum Sunday afternoon. Channel 2 in Houston confirmed the rumor later that night.

While Rafer could not be reached for comment by Channel 2, Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey did issue a statement.

"We are aware of the situation and are attempting to get more details about the incident," said the Houston GM. "While we do not have all the facts yet, it is nevertheless very disappointing to have one of our players involved with any police activity. We will continue working with the authorities in order to get to the bottom of the situation."

While Rafer has been a model citizen during his two seasons in Houston, this isn't new ground for Skip.

In 2005, after Rafer, then with the Raptors, reportedly got in to a fistfight with his head coach Sam Mitchell, Toronto Star columnist Dave Feschuk summed up some of the problems Rafer has had in his past.

[Rafer is] the same guy who was kicked off his junior-college team after he, according to a 1997 report in the Los Angeles Times, dropped a weight on the groin of a sleeping teammate with whom he had argued.

He's the same guy who faced misdemeanor battery charges twice in the late 1990s, once for beating up a neighbor who complained Alston's music was too loud, another time for striking a former girlfriend outside the weight room at Fresno State University.

He's the same guy who spent a month in county jail after he refused to complete the anger-management course that was a condition of his parole in one of those cases; who spent the 1998-99 season on the NBA's suspended list because of his prolific entanglements with the justice system.

This latest brush with the law couldn't come at a worse time for Alston and the Rockets. The Rocket reunions of Mike James and Steve Francis have made Skip expendable on paper, and it's well known that the 31-year old veteran was being shopped heavily in trade talks the last few weeks by the Rockets.
