Just when Luther Head was deemed healthy enough to play, the Rockets gave him the chance to do it elsewhere.
The Rockets cut Luther on Saturday, ending early his fourth season with the team.
"Luther has been a great player and representative for the Rockets organization," Rockets general manager Daryl Morey told the Houston Chronicle. "When it became clear he wasn't going to see minutes in our rotation, he maintained his professional demeanor and continued to work hard every day."
It's a sad end for Luther in Houston. The Rockets passed on big men Jason Maxiell and David Lee with the 24th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft to take Head, a 6-foot-3 guard out of Illinois who had moved up drastically on the charts after impressing scouts in athletic tests before the draft.
Head's best season with the Rockets came in his second season when he was a key bench component of Jeff Van Gundy's squad, averaging 10.9 points and hitting a blistering 44.1% from long range. However back-to-back playoff failures against the Utah Jazz in 2007 (4.6 points, 26% three) and 2008 (1-14 shooting) sealed his fate and the addition of Brent Barry and emergence of Von Wafer this season made him expendable.
The move also opens a roster spot potentially for the Rockets, who now have 14 players on the squad.
